Useful Tips on refilling inkjet printer cartridges:

Refilling an ink cartridge is not a messy job if it is done properly. It is not a time consuming or complicated process and you can considerably lower the chance that you mess your brand new shirt up.

Before you try to refill your printers cartridge, you might need a syringe, latex gloves, a used shirt, and newspaper and some paper towel for cleaning the cartridge head. (Don't use alcohol for cleaning the printhead.)

If you are an advocate of these after-market inks like me and are considering refill kits or bulk inks as an option, make sure that the third party cartridge or refill kit is compatible with your printer model.

If the wrong type of ink is used, you run the risk of streaked or runny photos or possibly damage to the printer. If you use third party refill inks use the same brand as your printer. Other brands could leak and affect the final print quality.

However, on that note I have to say that there are a few ink cartridge brands that can be refilled with other types of ink. You can for example refill a Dell inkjet cartridge with Lexmark refill ink or same goes with Compaq cartridges as well. And some of the Apollo inkjet cartridges can be refilled with Hewlett Packard refill inks.

The simple reason for this is that Lexmark manufacture inkjet cartridges for Dell and Compaq. So the formula of the inks should be the same. Bear in mind that printer manufacturers formulate their inks specifically for the cartridge type. Therefore, if you intend to print your family photos in good quality it is not advisable to mix inks in other cartridges. However, if you print only on plain office paper it should not be an issue.

While refilling cartridges might be another economical option, be very careful of the ones that come with the print head built into the cartridge. Some of these print head cartridges can be refilled frequently (up to 10 times), while other cartridges cannot be refilled even once.

Many  cartridges, such as  Epson and Canon are from the so called ink tank type cartridges.

These cartridges are simply reservoirs of ink used in printers where the print head is part of the printer.

The good news is that you don't really need to refill  these cartridges because third party manufacturers produce compatible products that are exact copies of the original. These Canon compatible cartridges      (or lets just say ink tanks) are available wholesale so cheaply, ($10-12) so I think there is no need to mess with them with the refilling.

Some advice if you refilling inkjet cartridges:

Try to refill the cartridge before it becomes completely empty. From the Print Properties you can bring up a Toolbox that has a meter, which measures the amount of ink you have left. Or just simply take the cartridge out of the printer and check that there is enough ink in it. This will significantly increase your refilling success rate!

I strongly advice Dont leave the cartridge out of your printer. It will dry out and clog the printhead.  If you dont fill the cartridge up and dont want to put it back, wrap it around with a rubber band or put it a zip-bag in order to prevent the ink from drying out.  Check the ink cartridge and print head. Once again, some printers have a separate print head that may get clogged.

If you refill a faulty ink cartridge with aftermarket ink that has a bad head, it simply won't work -- you'll need to change it.  So before refilling the cartridge, check for obvious damages like missing or damaged nozzle plate. Or the bubble generator area and circuits must not be damaged or tampered.

          >                 To save ink, be sure to set your printer to Draft or Fast-Draft mode for everyday printing, while you are printing your photos, change the setting to the Best settings.

                  > If you have to print a document that is in monochrome (black and white) do it with only a black ink cartridge. If you print black with a color ink cartridge, it mixes green, red, blue, and yellow ink, colors to create the black ink. This depletes your color ink cartridge a lot sooner than it would deplete a black ink cartridge.

                  > If you, for example, print WebPages from the Internet try not to print the entire document if you only need to print a portion of it. Select the most needed part of the document and print only that. If you can, try to skip printing the images on the printing file. Your ink cartridges will last much longer.

                   >Clean your print head if you haven't printed anything for a long period of time. If you want to clean the surface of the head, use a little vet paper towel.
